ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Two Iranian state-affiliated news outlets, Mehr News Agency and Tasnim News Agency, have reported that a deadly clash in the southeastern city of Saravan on Sunday resulted in the deaths of three armed assailants and one police officer. The incident, detailed in nearly identical dispatches from both agencies, underscores the persistent and volatile security situation in Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan province.

According to statements from the Sistan and Baluchestan Police Information Center, which were carried by both Mehr and Tasnim, the confrontation began in the early hours of Sunday.

Security forces conducting a patrol in Saravan County were subjected to what Mehr News Agency described as an "unprovoked armed attack by militants." Tasnim News Agency similarly characterized the event as a "cowardly armed attack by armed individuals."

In the ensuing engagement, police forces responded, killing three of the attackers. Both news agencies reported that security forces are actively pursuing the remaining assailants who fled the scene.

The clash resulted in casualties among the police, with both outlets confirming that one police officer was killed. A second officer was injured in the exchange and was subsequently transported to a medical facility for treatment.

The deadly exchange in Saravan takes place in the context of heightened security tensions in Iran's Sistan and Baluchestan province, a region that has experienced recurring violence. This latest clash comes just weeks after a major, high-casualty attack on a government building in the provincial capital, Zahedan.

On July 26, 2025, armed assailants stormed the provincial courthouse in Zahedan, launching an assault that left multiple people dead and wounded.

According to extensive reporting at the time from Iran's IRGC-affiliated Tasnim News Agency, that attack began with an infiltration of the building and escalated into indiscriminate shooting at civilians in the surrounding area.

The militant group Jaish al-Adl, which Iranian state media refers to as Jaish al-Zulm, reportedly claimed responsibility for the courthouse siege.

In the aftermath of the July attack, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that its forces had engaged and killed three of the attackers to secure the courthouse.

That incident resulted in a significant number of civilian casualties, with initial reports from Tasnim indicating that at least six people were "martyred" and 22 others were injured. The security response at the time involved a complete lockdown of the area and urgent warnings for civilians to remain clear as security forces and ambulances operated at the scene.
