ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – A police officer was killed and another wounded during an armed clash with gunmen in Iran's volatile Sistan-Baluchestan province, according to news agencies reporting on Saturday. The deadly firefight occurred in the city of Iranshahr and highlights the persistent security challenges in one of Iran's most restive regions.

The Sistan and Baluchestan Police Information Center announced the armed engagement, stating that Iranshahr police had clashed with armed individuals who were disrupting public order and security.

In an exchange of fire, one patrol member, identified as Ramin Sadeghi, was killed. Another officer was injured in the incident.

The Fars and ISNA news agencies also reported on the deadly gun battle.

According to a statement from the police information center, the armed assailants were wounded during the firefight before they fled the scene. The announcement confirmed that police forces were actively pursuing them.

The clash took place in a province described as one of Iran's poorest and the scene of frequent violence between security forces and various groups, including Baluch minority rebels, Sunni extremist organizations, and drug traffickers.

Sistan-Baluchestan is home to a large ethnic Baluch population, most of whom are Sunni Muslims, which stands in contrast to Iran's Shiite majority.

This incident is the latest in a series of violent events in the region.

In recent years, the Sunni jihadist group Jaish al-Adl (Army of Justice), which is based across the border in Pakistan, has claimed responsibility for multiple attacks in the area.

According to local media, the group carried out an attack in Sistan-Baluchestan on a recent Sunday that killed a police officer. On July 26, Jaish al-Adl also claimed an attack on a courthouse in the same province that resulted in the deaths of at least six people.
