ERBIL (Kurdistan24) –Several companies from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have begun implementing large-scale agricultural projects in Zakho, aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector and increasing domestic production.

Abdulrahman Abdullah, spokesperson for the General Directorate of Investment in Zakho, told Kurdistan24’s Mehvan Majid that the projects were initiated following Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s visits to the UAE and at his request to attract foreign investment.

One of the flagship projects spans 1,000 acres and is valued at an investment exceeding 4.35 billion Iraqi dinars. It focuses on cultivating a wide range of crops, including maize, wheat, rice, chickpeas, figs, and melons.

Launched in 2023, the project is scheduled for completion by 2025. Abdullah noted that it has already yielded promising results: wheat production reached about 600 tons last year, while bean production totalled 27 tons.

“The implementation of these projects will positively impact the region’s economy and create job opportunities for many residents,” Abdullah said.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources have reaffirmed their support, stressing that such initiatives are key to diversifying revenue sources, strengthening food security, and reducing reliance on oil.
