Former Salahaddin governor Ahmed al-Jubouri arrested in Baghdad on corruption charges
Sources say arrest of ‘Abu Mazen’ is linked to investigations into cases involving Salahaddin province and the former Education Ministry
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Iraqi authorities arrested former Salahaddin Governor Ahmed al-Jubouri, widely known as “Abu Mazen,” in Baghdad on Saturday on corruption charges, according to a senior source cited by the state-owned Iraqi News Agency (INA).
The senior source told INA that al-Jubouri was arrested in the Iraqi capital in connection with corruption allegations.
A security source separately told Kurdistan24 that al-Jubouri, who serves as secretary-general of the National Masses Party, was arrested in Baghdad on Saturday evening as part of an ongoing campaign to combat corruption.
According to the source, al-Jubouri’s name emerged during investigations into several cases related to Salahaddin province and Iraq’s former Ministry of Education.
The source did not provide further details about the specific allegations or the cases under investigation.
Al-Jubouri previously served as governor of Salahaddin province and has been a prominent political figure in the province.
The arrest comes as Iraq’s government continues to emphasize its campaign against corruption. The State Administration Coalition had previously reaffirmed the need to continue the anti-corruption campaign and support the government and Prime Minister Ali Falih al-Zaidi’s efforts in this area.
The Iraqi government has repeatedly identified corruption as a major challenge to state institutions and public services, with recent efforts focusing on pursuing officials and individuals accused of financial and administrative misconduct.
