Kurdistan24 Exclusive: US Official Denies Mental Health Crisis Aboard USS Lincoln
A US official tells Kurdistan24 the USS Abraham Lincoln has seen no rise in suicidal ideation and confirms steady access to food, water and hygiene supplies.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - A U.S. official told Kurdistan24, on Friday, that the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) has not seen any increase in suicidal ideation or attempts among its crew, pushing back on concerns about mental health conditions aboard the aircraft carrier, while also addressing questions about supply shortages linked to disruptions in the ship's operating environment.
Addressing concerns over the psychological wellbeing of Sailors and Marines aboard the carrier, the official told Kurdistan24: "We have not observed an increase in suicidal ideations or attempts aboard the ship. We take every service member's well-being seriously and have religious, medical and mental health professionals available to assess and address concerns as they arise. USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) has five Navy Chaplains, one clinical psychologist, one clinical social worker, three behavioral health technicians and an embedded integrated prevention coordination (EIPC) counselor. The ship also has an expeditionary facility dog, CAPT Fathom, to support crew morale and emotional welfare. These resources are available to Sailors and Marines throughout the Strike Group 24 hours a day, 7 days a week."
The official added that fluctuations in morale are a normal part of extended deployments, noting that Sailors go through routine transitions throughout a deployment cycle and that adapting to life at sea can be difficult. The official said the crew has learned to provide resources to help service members through these transitions, stressing that Abraham Lincoln is not experiencing an uptick in mental health issues.
On reports of supply shortages, the official explained that the carrier's location has complicated logistics. "Lincoln is operating in a highly contested environment where traditional supply hubs in the Middle East were disrupted by combat actions. In response, leadership prioritized mission-critical supplies: first food, then hygiene items, then mail. Current reports from the ship confirm continuous access to clean water, functional AC, and healthy meal options," the official said.
The statement indicated that despite the disruption to conventional resupply routes, essential provisions for the crew have remained intact through a prioritized distribution approach.
The official's remarks come as the USS Abraham Lincoln continues operations with Strike Group 24 in a region where traditional logistical support has been strained, with military leadership emphasizing that crew welfare and mission-critical supplies remain a continuous priority.
