President Masoud Barzani Extends Mawlid Greetings to Muslims Worldwide
In a message issued to mark the occasion, President Barzani prayed that God would bestow mercy and blessings on the people of Kurdistan, Iraq and humanity as a whole.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — President Masoud Barzani on Monday extended his congratulations to Muslims in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq and around the world on the occasion of Mawlid, marking the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad, according to a statement by Barzani Headquarters.
In a message issued to mark the occasion, President Barzani prayed that God would bestow mercy and blessings on the people of Kurdistan, Iraq and humanity as a whole.
He also expressed hope that Mawlid would bring peace, stability, prosperity, happiness and justice to the Kurdistan Region, Iraq and the wider world.
“On the occasion of the birth anniversary of the great Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and Mawlid, I extend my warmest congratulations to all Muslims in Kurdistan, Iraq, and around the world,” Barzani said.
He concluded his message by praying that the religious occasion would bring greater peace and well-being to people across the region and beyond.
Mawlid is the commemoration of the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad, observed annually on the 12th day of Rabi' al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic lunar calendar. In the Gregorian calendar, this falls during the last week of August 2026. Derived from the Arabic root walad ("to give birth"), the term also refers to the devotional poems composed and recited during this celebration.
Sunni Muslims trace the modern form of the festival to 1207 CE in Erbil, where it was organized by the brother-in-law of Sultan Saladin. It featured a month of festivities, public feasts, and torchlight processions.
