A senior US official told Axios: "Earlier today, US forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island. Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces were observed preparing to launch rockets with sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz."
The official's account, relayed through Axios, described the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as actively preparing to fire rockets fitted with sea mines toward the strategic waterway, one of the world's most critical corridors for global oil shipments.
The Iranian news agency Tasnim separately reported that preliminary, unofficial accounts pointed to casualties following what it described as an enemy drone attack on Larak Island, located in Iran's Hormozgan province. According to Tasnim, some early and unofficial reports indicated that two people had been killed and two others wounded, though no final, official figures had been released at the time of reporting.
Tasnim noted that Iranian authorities had yet to issue a confirmed, official account of the incident. With Washington and Tehran offering differing characterizations of the same incident — one describing a strike on active launch preparations, the other reporting on casualties from what it called a drone attack — the full picture of events on Larak Island remained unclear. Official Iranian confirmation of casualties had not yet been issued, underscoring the volatility surrounding the Strait of Hormuz as tensions between Washington and Tehran continued to simmer.
IRGC Confirms Casualties, Warns of Retaliation
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps later confirmed the strike on Larak Island in a Gulf statement, saying the bombing had killed and wounded a number of its fighters as well as civilians in the area. The Guard simultaneously warned of retaliation and severe punishment against the United States.
The public relations office of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of the Islamic Revolution disclosed the confirmation in an official statement issued Sunday, Aug. 30, 2026, saying US forces had attacked Larak Island near the Strait of Hormuz in what it called an act of aggression, resulting in the killing and wounding of a number of IRGC-affiliated fighters and civilians in the area.
The IRGC described the strike as a sign of Washington's failure to resolve its domestic crises and its declining position in the region, and warned that the aggression by Iran's adversaries would not go unanswered, saying it would be followed immediately by severe punishment of those responsible.
