Kurdish Woman Tops Social Democrats' Candidate List for Stockholm Region

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - A Kurdish woman has become the number one candidate for Sweden's Social Democratic Party for the Stockholm Regional Council in this year's Swedish elections, marking a significant milestone for Kurdish political representation in Scandinavia as the Kurdish diaspora in Sweden plays an increasingly visible role in the country's democratic life.

Tara Toana, who also serves as chair of the Social Democratic Women's organization in Sweden's capital, has been placed at the top of the party's candidate list for the Stockholm Regional Council, the most prominent position available to a candidate in a regional electoral list and the one most likely to result in a seat. Her placement at number one signals the party's confidence in her candidacy and its recognition of the Kurdish community as a significant and valued constituency.

In an exclusive interview with Kurdistan 24, Magdalena Andersson, former Prime Minister of Sweden and leader of the Social Democratic Party, said there is a long, deep, and historically warm relationship between Sweden and the Kurdistan Region. Andersson called on Kurdish Swedes to support the Social Democrats as members and voters to form a government that provides employment opportunities, good schools, a health system, and equality for everyone, without personal income being a barrier.

Andersson also issued a warning about the alternative, saying Sweden needs a Social Democratic government rather than the Sweden Democrats, the right-wing party, taking power, because the Social Democrats want public services to be available to everyone without discrimination.

Tara Toana told Kurdistan 24 that unlike the right-wing parties, her party has opened the door for women to reach the highest levels of decision-making, and that greater equality and justice can be achieved through that path. She noted that in this election, a significant number of women have put themselves forward as candidates, reflecting an effort to strengthen a democratic and egalitarian society in which women have decision-making power and a role in governing the country.

Toana's prominence in the Stockholm regional race reflects the broader political journey of Sweden's Kurdish diaspora, one of the largest and most politically active Kurdish communities in Europe. Swedish Kurds have been present in the country since the 1970s and have increasingly moved from community advocacy into mainstream political participation across multiple parties and levels of government.
