Gunman opens fire near high school in Manisa province and is detained shortly afterward, governor’s office says
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Eight people were wounded after a gunman opened fire outside a high school in western Türkiye on Tuesday morning, and the suspect was detained shortly afterward, the local governor’s office said.
The shooting occurred at around 7:59 a.m. local time (0459 GMT) in Turgutlu, an area west of the resort city of Izmir, according to a statement from the Manisa Governor’s Office.
The suspect was detained by security forces following the attack, the governor’s office said, without immediately providing further details about the individual or the motive for the shooting.
Earlier local media reports said five people, including students, had been wounded and that one of the victims was in serious condition. The governor’s office later revised the number of wounded to eight.
Police and medical teams were dispatched to the scene following the shooting, while security measures around the school were tightened.
The incident marks the latest in a series of school-related shootings in Türkiye.
In April, a 14-year-old gunman opened fire at a school in Kahramanmaras province, killing nine students aged 10 and 11 and a teacher. The attacker also died at the scene.
In a separate incident in the southeastern province of Sanliurfa, a former student opened fire at his former high school, wounding 16 people before taking his own life when confronted by police.
The incidents have triggered public concern and calls for stronger measures to prevent gun violence. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan previously dismissed a deputy education minister and said the government would introduce measures, including restrictions on gun ownership.
