Iraq, US Sign Agreement Transferring Diplomatic Support Site at Baghdad Airport

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Iraq and the United States on Thursday signed an agreement transferring the US Embassy’s diplomatic support site at Baghdad International Airport to the Iraqi government, as Baghdad moves to regulate its relations with Washington and conclude the foreign military presence in the country.

The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the agreement was signed during a ceremony in Baghdad by Mohammed Hussein Bahr Al-Uloom, Undersecretary for Bilateral Relations, on behalf of the Iraqi government, and Steven Fagin, Acting Chargé d’Affaires at the US Embassy in Baghdad, on behalf of the US government.

The ministry said the transfer is part of Iraq’s efforts to complete procedures related to ending the mission of the International Coalition and the presence of foreign military forces in Iraq, in line with the timeline set for September 30.

Bahr Al-Uloom described the agreement as an important step toward strengthening Iraqi-US relations and moving them into a new phase focused on cooperation and partnership, particularly in the economic, development, and energy sectors.

Fagin, meanwhile, expressed US support for Baghdad’s efforts to develop bilateral relations based on agreements and understandings reached between the two countries.

According to the ministry, the US official said the approach respects the sovereignty of both countries and creates new opportunities for joint cooperation.

The two sides said the agreement forms part of broader measures to establish frameworks for a new phase of Iraqi-US relations, with a focus on expanding areas of cooperation and shared interests.
