KRG Calls Coalition Mission End a 'Transition,' Not a Farewell
The KRG Department of Foreign Relations thanked Global Coalition partners as the military mission in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region ended, calling it a transition.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on Sept. 30 marked the conclusion of the Global Coalition's military mission in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, expressing what it called profound gratitude to every country and international partner that contributed to the campaign against ISIS.
In a statement on Thursday, the KRG Department of Foreign Relations (DFR) described the end of the mission as a transition rather than a farewell, saying the partnerships built over the past 12 years will endure.
Since 2014, Coalition personnel have worked alongside the Iraqi Security Forces and the Peshmerga, providing combat support, training, advice, intelligence, equipment and logistical assistance, according to the DFR. The department said these collective efforts helped protect the Kurdistan Region, liberate communities and achieve the territorial defeat of ISIS.
The DFR also paid special tribute to those who lost their lives or were injured during the mission. "Their courage and service will always be remembered with the highest respect and appreciation," the statement read.
The statement said the conclusion of the Coalition's mission proceeded through full cooperation and coordination between the KRG and the Federal Government of Iraq. Both sides, it added, remain committed to working together to prevent the resurgence of ISIS and to confront any threat to the security and stability of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
Looking ahead, the DFR said the KRG hopes to maintain security and military cooperation with Coalition members through appropriate bilateral and multilateral frameworks. At the same time, it intends to open a broader chapter of diplomatic and economic engagement in trade, investment, education, development and technology.
The DFR concluded by reaffirming the enduring gratitude of the KRG and the people of the Kurdistan Region to all members of the Global Coalition.
