ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - The Christian Alliance welcomed the reactivation of the Kurdistan Parliament and the resumption of its legislative and oversight duties, describing the move as an important national achievement for the Kurdistan Region. The alliance also called for amendments to the election law so that voting for Christian quota seats is limited to Christian voters.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Christian Alliance extended its warmest congratulations to the people of Kurdistan on the Parliament’s reactivation and the restart of its activities in legislation and oversight.

The alliance welcomed the step as a significant national gain that will play an effective role in strengthening the Region’s institutions, protecting the constitutional entity of the Kurdistan Region, and guaranteeing citizens’ rights.

It also commended the national forces that took part in bringing about this achievement, and called on all political parties, including those that did not attend the session, to unite their ranks and turn the Parliament hall into a space for national dialogue and joint work.

In another part of the statement, the alliance stressed that protecting the rights of the original components, ensuring their fair participation in all institutions of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, and giving them full freedom to choose their true representatives are the main pillar and firm foundation of national unity and coexistence.

On the election process and the quota seats, the Christian Alliance called for amending the election laws and procedures of both the Kurdistan Parliament and the Iraqi federal parliament. It asked that voting for the Christian quota seats be limited to Christian voters alone, and that the number of seats be returned to its former number.

The alliance said the aim is to preserve the distinctiveness and core purpose of the quota system and to guarantee genuine and deserving representation for the Christian people, including Chaldeans, Assyrians, Syriacs, and Armenians, free from any interference or political dealing. This, it said, would help build a united, stable, and prosperous homeland for all citizens.

The statement comes as the Kurdistan Parliament held a session on Wednesday with 52 lawmakers in attendance and elected its presidency.

Separately, Vala Farid, Speaker of the Kurdistan Parliament, addressed a message to all blocs at a press conference, urging them to take part in the Parliament’s upcoming sessions. She also asked the blocs to submit the names of their candidates for the Parliament’s committees by Monday of next week, particularly for the legal committee.
