EU Welcomes Reactivation of Kurdistan Region Parliament, Calls for Inclusive Political Engagement

"An inclusive political engagement is also necessary to advance towards the swift formation of the regional government in the interest of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq as a whole," the EU said, encouraging all political parties to engage constructively.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The European Union (EU) on Thursday welcomed the reactivation of the Kurdistan Region Parliament and the election of its new presidium, describing the developments as important steps towards ensuring the proper functioning of democratic institutions.

In a response to Kurdistan24's email inquiry, the EU said the resumption of parliamentary activities was a positive development, expressing hope that the political divisions that had affected the legislature's work over the past two years could be overcome through an inclusive approach.

"The resumption of the Parliament of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and the election of a new presidium are welcome developments to ensure the functioning of democratic institutions," the EU stated.

The EU also stressed the importance of inclusive political engagement in advancing governance and political stability in the Kurdistan Region, particularly regarding the formation of the next regional government.

"An inclusive political engagement is also necessary to advance towards the swift formation of the regional government in the interest of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq as a whole," the EU said, encouraging all political parties to engage constructively.

On Wednesday, the Kurdistan Region Parliament officially resumed its legislative activities, ending a nearly two-year deadlock that had persisted since the October 2024 parliamentary elections.

The legislature convened its first session in nearly two years, with 52 lawmakers attending and meeting the required absolute majority quorum. During the session, lawmakers elected a permanent presidium, marking a significant step towards restoring the parliament's institutional role.

The EU's remarks come as political parties in the Kurdistan Region face renewed calls to resolve their differences through parliamentary dialogue and move forward with the formation of the new regional government.
