CENTCOM establishes task force to disrupt Iran’s weapons supply routes
New unit will coordinate efforts to block the movement of advanced weapons, sanctioned materials, and illicit revenues through Iran’s land borders and the Caspian Sea, expanding US pressure beyond maritime routes
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — US Central Command (CENTCOM) has established a new task force to disrupt Iran’s use of land routes and the Caspian Sea to transport advanced weapons, sanctioned materials, and other restricted goods, expanding Washington’s efforts to restrict Tehran’s military supply networks and revenue sources beyond the maritime domain.
Named Task Force Iron Gate, the unit was established on Nov. 7 at the direction of CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper.
It comprises approximately 20 civilian and military personnel based in Tampa, Florida, and will coordinate with other US government agencies to prevent the movement of advanced weapons systems, dual-use technologies, sanctioned materials, and illicit revenue streams across Iran’s land borders and the Caspian Sea.
Cooper said the initiative would reinforce the effectiveness of the US naval blockade against Iran by extending enforcement efforts to alternative transportation networks.
He said closer coordination among US government agencies would further restrict Tehran’s ability to finance terrorism, rebuild weapons factories, and replenish its military capabilities.
The new task force comes as Washington seeks to close potential gaps in its campaign against Iran’s trade and military supply networks.
With Iranian ports facing a US naval blockade, overland transportation routes and alternative maritime corridors have become increasingly important to Tehran’s efforts to maintain trade and access supplies despite restrictions.
The Caspian Sea, which connects Iran with Russia and other countries in the region, is a significant alternative transportation corridor. Overland routes through neighboring countries also provide potential channels for moving goods, including materials that could have military applications.
CENTCOM said the naval blockade has prevented Iran from exporting more than $25 billion worth of crude oil in recent months. US forces continue enforcing restrictions against ships entering or departing Iranian ports, as Washington seeks to limit Tehran's access to international trade and revenue.
The establishment of Task Force Iron Gate therefore marks an expansion of the US enforcement strategy, bringing land transportation networks and the Caspian Sea into the broader effort to restrict Iran’s military procurement and financial resources.
It also comes amid heightened tensions and diplomatic efforts to prevent a renewed escalation of the eight-month war between Iran and the United States.
Tehran on Saturday has maintained that its military capabilities have strengthened despite the conflict, with Iranian officials saying the armed forces are on higher alert and that the country's missile range continues to expand.
At the same time, diplomatic contacts have intensified, with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi holding telephone conversations with counterparts from 12 countries over a 48-hour period.
Qatar has also emerged as a key mediator, with its prime minister expressing confidence that diplomatic efforts, supported by Washington and Tehran, had helped prevent a further escalation.
The strategic importance of restricting Iran's alternative supply routes is also underscored by the continuing standoff over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital international shipping corridor through which approximately one-fifth of global oil consumption normally passes.
Tehran has threatened to keep the waterway closed until Washington meets its demands, raising concerns over the security of energy supplies and international maritime trade.
Meanwhile, Washington has offered a $20 million reward for information about Iran's nuclear programme, including facilities, equipment, and personnel associated with it, adding another dimension to its campaign to constrain Tehran's military and strategic capabilities.
