ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Saturday that he discussed regional security arrangements “free from the interference of extra-regional powers” in phone calls with counterparts from 12 countries over the past 48 hours.

“Over the past 48 hours, I have held separate telephone conversations with 12 of my counterparts,” Araghchi was quoted as saying by the semi-official ISNA news agency.

The counterparts were from Oman, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Cyprus, Türkiye, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Tunisia, Iraq, and Pakistan.

Araghchi said the calls covered the latest regional and international developments, including the risks of widening tensions in the Middle East and the consequences of what he described as escalatory actions by the US and Israel.

He also stressed Tehran’s “legitimate right to defend its sovereignty and national security,” as well as the importance of “avoiding destructive foreign interference.”

Araghchi said he underlined respect for the territorial sovereignty of states, an end to threats and attacks, and non-interference by outside forces.

He added that regional countries should prevent instability from spreading and create room for a regional security agreement without external involvement.

On Friday, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein told Araghchi in a phone call that a regional committee of foreign ministers could be formed to mediate between Iran and the US and help resolve the conflict, according to The New Region.

Separately, Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said on Friday that the US and Iran had not reached a final agreement. He urged both sides to accept a “good” deal rather than pursue a “perfect” one.

Trump said on Friday that Washington is holding talks with Iran. He spoke to reporters at the White House before leaving for Florida, and when asked what his message to Iran was, Trump said the US is “doing very well” with Iran. He added that no US soldier had been lost in six or seven months and that the Strait of Hormuz is open.

Asked about shipping traffic in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said, “The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is under way. In the past, they have done more oil trade than they did before, and we are doing very well and talking with Iran.”
