BAGHDAD, Iraq (Kurdistan24) – Two explosions on Saturday morning targeted a busy commercial area in central Baghdad, leaving nearly 21 dead and over 40 injured, police and medics said.
Both explosions occurred in the crowded neighborhood of al-Sinak.
After the first blast, people began rescuing the injured victims. The second explosion targeted the same area killing and wounding more people, police revealed.
Following the violence, ambulances rushed to the scene and transferred the wounded people to nearby hospitals.
According to a Baghdad security statement, two “terrorists” wearing suicide vests blew themselves up in the middle of the neighborhood’s crowded shopping district.
In an online statement, the Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attacks. The group often targets civilians in the capital of Iraq.
IS emerged in northern Iraq in June 2014, occupying large swaths of territory.
Since then, the group lost most of the areas it once controlled and continues to shrink in Mosul, the second-largest city in Iraq.
