Trump will provide more support to Iraq in IS war: PM

The Prime Minister of Iraq Haider al-Abadi on Monday revealed the US President Donald Trump assured greater support from Washington in the battle against the Islamic State (IS).

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – The Prime Minister of Iraq Haider al-Abadi on Monday revealed the US President Donald Trump assured greater support from Washington in the battle against the Islamic State (IS).

Abadi’s remarks followed his first meeting with Trump in the White House where the two emphasized a new strategy to eradicate the extremist group in Iraq.

Iraqi forces are currently in an ongoing military operation against IS to liberate Mosul, the stronghold and self-proclaimed capital of the insurgent group.

According to the PM, Trump was more enthusiastic in defeating IS compared to the former administration under Barack Obama.

“I think they’re prepared to do more to fight terrorism and be more engaged,” Abadi said after his meeting with Trump.

The Iraqi Prime Minister added he had been told the US’ backing would “not only continue but [would] accelerate.”

“Of course, we have to be careful here,” he continued. “We are not talking about military confrontation as such. Committing troops is one thing while fighting terrorism is another thing.”

According to a White House statement, the two leaders agreed “terrorism cannot be defeated by military might alone.”

Moreover, the two sides discussed fostering economic ties, particularly in the energy sector.

Following the meeting, Abadi called for more financial aid from the international community.

“We [would] love to see more funds so that we can quickly [regain] prosperity and stabilization in these areas,” he explained.

Additionally, President Trump praised Iraqi troops currently fighting IS in Mosul.

“It’s not an easy job. It’s a very tough job. Your soldiers are fighting hard. I know Mosul is moving along...We will figure something out,” he said.

“Our main thrust is we have to get rid of [IS]. We’re going to get rid of [IS]. It will happen. It’s happening right now,” Trump concluded.
