ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A man from Al-Basirah city in Syria’s eastern Deir al-Zor province was wounded when unknown assailants shot him in his house, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) war monitor reported on Friday.

The injured man was transferred to a hospital. According to SOHR activists who reported the incident, he did not belong to any faction in Syria’s volatile eastern province.

The report noted that ISIS has carried out at least 39 operations in the region since the beginning of 2022. These included “armed attacks and explosions, in areas under the control of the Autonomous Administration.”

The Autonomous Administration refers to the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), a Kurdish-led administration that controls large swathes of  of the country, including the strategically-important Deir al-Zor province.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) is a key US ally in the fight against ISIS in Syria and remains, in the words of the US-led coalition against ISIS, an “instrumental” ally in preventing any ISIS resurgence.

SOHR statistics indicate that ISIS’s 39 operations in the AANES territories have “left 26 persons dead: eight civilians and 18 members of SDF, the Internal Security Forces and other military formations operating in areas under the control of the Autonomous Administration.”

“It’s worth noting that these attacks have not included the operation of Guwayran prison, which left heavy losses,” the report concluded by noted.

ISIS attacked that prison in a major coordinated operation in January to free thousands of its fellow imprisoned inmates. The SDF foiled the attack with support from the coalition and secured the prison after ten days of heavy fighting.

On Thursday, the SOHR also reported that unidentified gunmen using a motorbike shot dead a member of the SDF in Deir al-Zor’s eastern countryside.

“It is worth noting that the victim was responsible for watering trees in the SDF-backed 1st Brigade in Al-Jarzi in Deir Ezzor (Deir al-Zor) countryside,” read the SOHR report.

“This (attack) came amid ISIS cells ongoing activities in areas under control of SDF,” it added.
