ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Japanese Ambassador to Iraq, Futoshi Matsumoto, on Tuesday told Kurdistan24 that they’re going to establish photovoltaic stations in the Kurdistan Region.

“We are talking with the Ministry of Electricity about establishing substations together with photovoltaic stations,” the envoy stressed.

Matsumoto also said that he would like to “level up” their relations with the Kurdistan Region.

“We are going to build sewage in Erbil… in the coming years,” he added and noted, “If anyone has a good idea for a future project let me hear I'm ready to hear your request.”

On Nov. 5, 2022, Matsumoto announced that Japan had provided long-term loans to the Iraqi Government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to improve the electricity, water, and agriculture sectors in Iraq.

The JICA has undertaken several projects with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) including waterways, agriculture, and electrical infrastructure. It has also been in talks with the KRG’s Ministry of Municipalities and Tourism to amend the capital Erbil’s current master plan of renovating the entire city, including the Citadel, a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Centre.
