UN asks Kurdistan help settle Iraqi political turmoil

On Wednesday, the UN envoy to Iraq asked the KRG to address the political instability in Baghdad.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – On Wednesday, the UN envoy to Iraq asked the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to help return political stability to Baghdad.

The Prime Minister of the KRG, Nechirvan Barzani, received the UN Secretary General in Iraq, Jan Kubis, and his delegates in Erbil.

In the meeting, Kubis discussed the current political situation in Baghdad and expressed his concern about the demonstrations and political rifts.

He mentioned that the United Nations continues speaking with all Iraqi political blocs, asking them to take into the consideration the sensitivity of the current situation in Iraq as the country is at war with the jihadists in the north.

Kubis hoped that Kurdistan Region leadership will visit Baghdad and conduct a peaceful dialogue with Iraqi political factions.

Barzani noted that although there are many problems between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Federal Government of Iraq that remain unsolved, KRG believes it is not in the interest of Iraq and the Region to allow political and security gaps in the country.

Prime Minister also stated that the KRG will continue its attempt to assist the Iraqi federal government to deal with the current turmoil.

The politicians then discussed security and economy in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
