Two deadly explosions occured in Rojava
Two separate explosions targeted the Kurdish city of Qamishlo in Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava) on Saturday.
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – Two separate explosions targeted the Kurdish city of Qamishlo and the town of Tal Abyad in Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava) on Saturday.
A Kurdistan24 reporter in Qamishlo said the first explosion was a car bomb attack in Osman Sabri square in the city's Halaiya neighborhood killing two people and injuring two others.
The second explosion occurred in Tal Abyad (known as Girê Spî in Kurdish) where a sticky bomb was attached to a Kurdish security (Asayish) car killing two security personnel and wounding two others, according to a Kurdistan24 reporter in Kobani citing Kurdish security sources.
The explosion that ocurred in Qamishlo happened while the Kurdish National Council, also known as ENKS, was organizing demonstrations across Kurdish cities in Rojava.
The protests were meant to condemn the 100 years of the Sykes-Picot agreement that divided Kurdistan by the two great powers of that time, Britain and France in 1916.
In late April, a suicide attack in the Kurdish-controlled northeastern city of Qamishlo in the early morning killed at least five security elements and wounded several civilians.
At the time, Kurdistan24 learned that the explosion occurred in the city when a suicide bomber targeted a checkpoint belonging to the Kurdish internal security forces (Asayish).
Qamishlo has already been targeted by a series of explosions and suicide attacks in addition to intermittent clashes between the Kurdish forces of People’s Protection Units (YPG) and Syrian government militias.
The latest clashes took place two weeks ago and lasted for three days. Asayish forces seized the main prison in the city and several government-controlled positions after the conflict.
Qamishlo, in Hasakeh province, is under the shared control of the Syrian regime and Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) and its YPG military wing, who have declared zones of “autonomous administration” across parts of north and northeast Syria.
