ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – On Wednesday, President Barzani expressed his sympathies with the families of the infants who died in a fire break out in Yarmuk hospital, Baghdad.

At least 12 newborns lost their lives after a hospital in Yarmuk caught fire, security sources said.

President of the Kurdistan Region Masoud Barzani expressed his condolences to the families of the killed babies and wished the wounded a speedy recovery.

Barzani mentioned the incident was tragic and he hoped that it would never happen again. He called on the officials to protect children’s life.

According to local media outlets, it took about three hours for the firefighters and hospital staff to extinguish the fire. Iraqi authorities mentioned that the fire might have been caused by an electricity shock.

Yarmuk is one of the important hospitals in Baghdad which provides emergency care facilities among many other medical services.

Following the incident, Hani al-Okabi, a member of parliament who also managed a health directorate in Baghdad before, told journalists that 11 or 12 other babies with 29 women were rescued from inside the hospital after the fire claimed the building.

"My son's birth was difficult," Shaima Hussein, the mother of one of the killed babies told Reuters.

"I came with milk powder for him, and then this happened... They shut the electricity and the doors," she cried.

Recently, Baghdad has had a large number of casualties mostly caused by suicide attacks.
