Sweden increases military advisers in Kurdistan Region

Swedish PM visited the military base where the Swedish military advisers are based.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – During his visit at the Kurdistan Region, the Swedish Prime Minister promised to increase the number of Swedish military advisers in the Region.

Swedish PM Stefan Löfven arrived at Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, on Monday and was received by his counterpart Nechirvan Barzani, Deputy PM Qubad Talabani and other senior officials at Erbil International Airport.

On Tuesday, the Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani met with PM Löfven in Erbil.

According to a statement by the Kurdistan Region Presidency (KRP), in the meeting between President Barzani and PM Löfven, the Mosul operation, post-Islamic State (IS) Mosul and the role of Peshmerga forces in fighting IS were discussed.

PM Löfven praised the role of the Peshmerga force in the fight against IS, and stressed Sweden’s continuous support to Kurdistan Region and Peshmerga, the KRP statement said.

PM Löfven stated that “Sweden is planning to increase the number of military advisers training the Peshmerga forces,” praising the coordination between Peshmerga forces and the Iraqi security forces, the statement read.

According to the statement, President Barzani thanked the people and government of Sweden for helping the people of Kurdistan and praised the role of Swedish military advisers in training Peshmerga forces.

The Swedish delegation headed by PM Löfven also met with the KRG PM, Deputy PM and respective ministers.

In a statement on his official Facebook account, Löfven said that Swedish advisers are training Peshmerga forces who play an important role in the fight against IS.

In July, Swedish Defense Minister stated that Sweden will step up its role in the fight against IS by increasing the number of soldiers in the Kurdistan Region.
