SHINGAL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – Kurdish Peshmerga forces on Tuesday morning killed six Islamic State (IS) militants in an ambush near the Shingal Cement Factory in the Ezidi-populated city of Sinjar (Shingal).
“One of the Da’esh militants was a suicide bomber who detonated himself,” Sime Mohammed, a Peshmerga Commander in Shingal, told Kurdistan24, using the Arabic acronym for IS.
The Commander also noted no Peshmerga soldier was injured or killed in the aftermath of the suicide explosion.
“We had information that some IS militants wanted to escape to Syria through Peshmerga front lines,” Qassim Simo, head of Shingal Security, told Kurdistan24.
After the extremist group had occupied Shingal in August 2014, Peshmerga forces with the support of the US-led coalition warplanes liberated the city in November 2015.
Although the center of the city and many towns around Shingal have been freed, some areas in the south and southeast of the region remain under the control of IS.
Peshmerga forces have repeatedly repelled attacks from the insurgent group in the area.
