KIRKUK, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – On Sunday, two booby traps planted by the Islamic State (IS) in the south of Kirkuk Province detonated, injuring six Peshmerga soldiers.

The bombs exploded at 7:30 in the morning, according to a statement by Mohammed Fayeq, the head of Khurmatu’s media office.

Fayeq noted the explosion happened at the Bir Ahmed Round which is located in the west of Khurmatu.

Following the blast, the six wounded Peshmerga soldiers were transferred to the nearby hospital, according to the statement.

Khurmatu is one of the disputed territories located in the southern Kurdistan Region.

The area was under the command of Salahaddin Province, but after the emergence of IS in 2014, Khurmatu was linked with the Kirkuk administration.

Moreover, the extremist group’s front lines remain close to the town.

On March 18, another IS booby trap detonated in the village of Zarga in Khurmatu, wounding four Peshmerga soldiers.
