Iraq suffered a total of 720 casualties in April: UNAMI
The UNAMI statement did not mention any figures about the number of Iraqi security forces killed and wounded in the fight the Islamic State (IS) extremists in the month of April.
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – A total of 317 Iraqis were killed, and 403 others wounded in April due to violence, armed conflict, and terrorism across the country, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) revealed.
According to the UNAMI monthly figures released on Sunday, among the 317 people killed during the month of November, 309 of them were civilians.
The UNAMI statement did not include data regarding the number of Iraqi security forces killed or wounded in the fight the Islamic State (IS) extremists during the month of April.
The statement added the “Nineveh province was the most affected governorate in Iraq, with 276 casualties, 153 killed, 123 injured, followed by the Baghdad Governorate with 55 killed and 179 injured, and Salah al-Din with 15 killed and 43 wounded.”
Quoting Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, Jan Kubis, the statement said that “Daesh [Arabic acronym for IS] terrorists have detonated car bombs in residential neighborhoods in Mosul and attacked civilians desperately fleeing the fighting as the security forces liberate more territory from the terrorists."
Kubis added that “civilians continue to pay a heavy price in the conflict, notably in Nineveh where, in the city of Mosul, Iraqi security forces are confronting the Daesh terrorists in heavy street fighting.”
“According to information obtained by UNAMI from the Health Directorate in Anbar, the Governorate suffered a total of 74 civilian casualties, 39 killed and 35 injured,” the statement said.
The number of civilian casualties in Iraq has decreased compared to the month of March, which had a total of 548 civilians killed, and 567 wounded.
