May deadliest month of 2017 so far due to IS violence

Violent acts perpetrated by the Islamic State (IS) or in its name have claimed over 1,000 casualties in May making it the deadliest month of 2017 so far.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – Violent acts perpetrated by the Islamic State (IS) or in its name have claimed over 1,000 casualties in May making it the deadliest month of 2017 so far.

While the war against IS has been focused on its self-declared Caliphate and strongholds in Syria and Iraq, militants around the world have carried out attacks in the group’s name.

Starting with the killing of five police officers and two bank guards in southern Kashmir on May 1, the month ended with 80 people killed in a major blast in Kabul’s diplomatic district.

On May 2, IS insurgents killed at least 37 Iraqi refugees and wounded 100 others heading to a refugee camp in Syria’s Hasakah Province near the Iraqi border.

The extremist group intensified the violence as the holy month of Ramadan approached, carrying out four different attacks in three separate countries on May 21, claiming the lives of at least 70 civilians.

A day later, the Manchester Arena bombing took place killing 22 people, for which IS took credit.

Experts have said IS has vowed to transform the month of Ramadan into a month of unparalleled bloodshed.

With the killing of 28 Coptic Christians in Egypt on May 26 and the targeting of an ice cream parlor in Baghdad’s Karrada neighborhood which killed dozens of people on May 29, terrorism researchers are worried this year’s Ramadan could once again see an increase in violence.
