Islamic State executes 15 of own fighters: Afghan official

The ongoing violence between the militant groups of IS and Taliban has killed and injured thousands of civilians in Afghanistan.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) - An official said on Thursday that Islamic State (IS) has beheaded 15 of its own fighters as a result of an infighting in Afghanistan.

The same day a suicide attack in the provincial capital of Jalalabad killed at least eight.

The IS fighters were executed in Surkh Ab bazaar of Achin district, said Attaullah Khogyani, the provincial governor’s spokesman.

The local branch of IS known as Islamic State in Khorasan, an old name for the area that includes modern Afghanistan and parts of Iran, has not reported on the beheading.

The ongoing violence between the militant groups of IS and Taliban has killed and injured thousands of civilians in Afghanistan.

So far no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

In addition to the eight casualties, 15 have been wounded, a spokesperson for the Jalalabad hospital said.

IS appeared in Afghanistan in early 2015 and selected the border area with Pakistan, Nangarhar, as its capital.

The Taliban and IS have fought each other and are both been targets of US airstrikes.

Nonetheless, the two groups have been seen in isolated incidents in Afghanistan to be cooperating.

Afghan intelligence documents reviewed by Reuters this year showed security officials believe Islamic State is present in nine provinces, from Nangarhar and Kunar in the east to Jawzjan, Faryab and Badakhshan in the north and Ghor in the central west.
