WATCH: Dalkurd snap five-game losing streak, record 1-1 draw against Malmö
Dalkurd's 1-1 draw with opponents Malmö ended a five-game losing streak in the Swedish first division.
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdish-affiliated Swedish football team Dalkurd FF on Sunday recorded their first points in over a month after a 1-1 draw with opponents Malmö FF in the Swedish first division, snapping a five-game losing streak in the process.
Dalkurd took the lead late in the first-half through striker Ahmed Awad in the 43rd minute but were pegged back 10 minutes after the restart after Malmö’s Swedish international Carlos Strandberg struck his side’s equalizing goal in the 55th minute.
It was a similar story for Dalkurd, one that the team and its fans have experienced all too often this season: dropped points after taking the lead.
The draw moves the club temporarily off the foot of the table into 15th place with five points from 11 matches played.
Their next game is against Brommapojkarna, who are one spot above them in the Allsvenskan table. The match will be played on July 7 at 7:00 p.m. (ERB).
Dalkurd, based in the Swedish city of Borlänge, was founded on Sep. 26, 2004, by nine Kurdish immigrants as a social project to keep children distracted from the vices of the streets.
The club has since built academies in both Sweden, and the Kurdistan Region as Dalkurd takes pride in being “born with a social responsibility,” according to their website.
The team’s colors are symbolic of Kurdistan, with the Kurdish flag included in the crest on their shirts.
The club has bull-dozed its way up the ranks of Swedish football since their 2005 introduction in Tier Seven, winning five promotions in their first five seasons.
With promotion into the first level of Swedish football, Dalkurd now faces the prospect of UEFA Champions League or Europa League qualification—an opportunity awarded to the top three teams in the Allsvenskan league.
However, with their recent form, the club will be hoping to avoid relegation and stay in the Swedish first division for another season.
