PM Masrour Barzani conveys ‘solidarity’ in wake of Vienna, Kabul attacks
Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday conveyed his solidarity to the people of Afghanistan and Austria over the twin attacks that targeted the countries, resulting in a score of fatalities and injuries.
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday conveyed his solidarity to the people of Afghanistan and Austria over the twin attacks that targeted the countries, resulting in a score of fatalities and injuries.
Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s tweet came a day after the Afghan capital Kabul along with Austria’s Vienna faced bloody terrorist attacks that claimed around 26 fatalities and a score of injuries.
“I convey my solidarity to the people of Austria and Afghanistan in the wake of horrific attacks in Vienna and Kabul,” PM Barzani said in the tweet, sharing his thoughts with the victims and their families as well the Afghani and Austrian governments.
The Afghan capital on Monday witnessed a deadly attack when three gunmen rampaged a university building in Kabul, one of whom blew himself up while the other two sporadically shot students inside classrooms, leaving 22 dead, according to official figures.
Several gunmen on the same day in the heart of Vienna opened fire near a synagogue, killing four Austrians while 15 more people were injured. Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz described the attack as a “repulsive terror attack.”
Notably, the attacks in Vienna came after the deadly series of shooting and knife attacks that hit the French cities of Lyon and Nice after a Parisian schoolteacher showed cartoons of the Islamic Prophet to his pupils. A top Kurdistan Region official immediately condemned the attacks.

“Terrorism is a global threat,” Prime Minister Barzani tweeted, as he urged, “We must stand united against such heinous acts.”

The Kurdistan Region has good relations with Austria as the country provided the region with support in its fight against the so-called Islamic State and hosting refugees. The then-foreign minister, Sebastian Kurz, paid a visit to the capital Erbil to guarantee Austria’s support to the autonomous region.
