ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Faysh Khabur border directorate announced on Tuesday that holders of Kurdistan Region residency cards and foreign passports stranded in northeast Syria will be allowed to cross the border on Wednesday.

The border crossing administration said they can enter the Kurdistan Region through the al-Waleed border crossing on Wednesday between 9 am and 4 pm.

However, the administration also specified that it's only for individuals who have officially crossed the Faysh Khabur border.

According to a press release by EU aid organization ECHO, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) closed the Faysh Khabur-Semalka border crossing in December following tensions there.

In mid-December, suspected Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) supporters attacked the Faysh Khabur crossing office and severely injured several Kurdistan Region border guards.

"More than 100 PKK members attacked our border office at Faysh Khabur border crossing point with Syria," border office director Shawkat Barbuhari announced at the time.

On Jan 6, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) allowed temporary Syrian residents in the Kurdistan Region to visit the crossing to complete the required paperwork needed to return to Syria.
