ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A Sulaimani court on Wednesday released Kurdish journalist and writer Jamal Abdulla on bail after it had arrested him two days ago.

The journalist was freed early Wednesday, a Kurdistan 24 reporter in Sulaimani said.

Mr. Abdulla on Monday appeared in court in Sulaimani and was arrested following the hearing based on an arrest warrant that had been issued previously for a different case.

The arrest sparked an outcry from numerous journalists, saying the case upon which Mr. Abdulla had been arrested “had nothing to do” with the case, for which he had received a court appearance notification.

He had previously served as spokesperson in the sixth Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet.

Rahman Gharib, the head of the Metro Center for Journalists' Rights and Advocacy, condemned the arrest of Abdulla. The Center labels itself as a journalist-rights watchdog monitoring the free press situation in the Kurdistan Region.

The journalist has given commentaries on domestic Kurdish politics on several television channels, including Kurdistan 24.
