ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani on Sunday ordered the launch of an investigation into two drone attacks on Erbil province’s Pirmam town on Saturday night, according to the military media.

The Security Media Cell announced the “comprehensive investigation” into the “criminal attack” on Pirmam town at the order of the Iraqi premier, who is also the commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

The Iraqi forces would cooperate with the Kurdistan Region security to investigate the matter, according to the statement.

The launch of the investigation came after Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani called on the Iraqi premier to take “practical measures” to punish and sanction the outlawed groups that launched the attacks.

“I'm deeply alarmed by last night's terrorist attack on a Peshmerga base northeast of Erbil. I condemn the outlaws and their collaborators in the strongest terms possible,” Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said.

"We know well the issues at play here and the outlaws behind them, and have a right to defend our people," the prime minister said.

The Kurdish premier said those use state money and weapons to "attack the Kurdistan Region, destabilize the whole of the country, and risk renewed conflict in a nation that has seen enough bloodshed.”

The KRG statement on early Saturday described the attack as "dangerous and provocative".

Kurdistan Region in recent months has come under increasing drone strikes, mostly targeting the Coalition against ISIS forces base.

In one such attack, at least three US service members were wounded, prompting a deadly US strike on an Iranian-backed group in Babylon governorate shortly after.
