KDP President Masoud Barzani receives Australia’s Ambassador to Iraq Glenn Miles
In the meeting, the KDP President described the annulment of quota seats as a blow to partnership and coexistence.
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) President Masoud Barzani received Australia’s Ambassador Glenn Miles on Monday in the hometown of Pirmam in Erbil.
According to the statement from the KDP President Office, “Australia’s Ambassador commended the bilateral relations between Australia and the Kurdistan Region and expressed the desire for strengthening the relationship between two countries.”
A major topic of discussion between President Barzani and Ambassador Miles revolved around the issue of parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region.
The Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, in a decree, scheduled June 10 as the date for the parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region.
However, the statement reads that the problem of annulment of quota seats was discussed by both KDP President and the Ambassador of Australia. “The difficulties that have impeded the election process as well as the annulment of the quota seats and their absence from the electoral process were major parts of the discussions.”
“The annulment of the quota seats is a blow to the idea of partnership and coexistence,” read the statement.
"These communities are an integral part of the Kuridstan and because of the competetiveness of the election in our Region, they may not be able to get their representation in the Kurdistan parliament without the quota seats," the statement read.
During the meeting, the Kurdistan Region’s commitment to the importance of coexistence was praised by the Australian Ambassador.
In another topic of the meeting, the presence of the international coalition forces in Iraq was discussed.
KDP President Barzani said, "This is a national issue and relates to all communities in Iraq, and the dangers of reemergence of terrorism should be understood from this perspective.”
