ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - Iraqi National Security Adviser Qasim al-Araji arrived in Erbil at the head of a high-ranking security delegation to address escalating tensions between the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Turkish army in the border areas of the Kurdistan Region.
On Thursday, July 11, 2024, Kurdistan 24 reported that Al-Araji is scheduled to meet with Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani to discuss these tensions.
The previous day, the Iraqi National Security Council expressed its “rejection of the Turkish military incursion across the border” while also affirming its “rejection of the use of Iraqi territory as a launching pad for attacks on neighboring countries.”
Major General Yahya Rasool, the official spokesperson of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, stated that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani chaired a meeting of the Ministerial Council for National Security.
The council discussed the most important security topics, including Turkish incursions, and emphasized that such actions are rejected. The council stressed that Turkey must respect the principles of good neighborliness and diplomatically coordinate with Iraq on security issues.
The council directed that a delegation, headed by the National Security Advisor, be sent to the Kurdistan Region to review the situation and form a unified stance on the issue affecting Iraqi sovereignty.
The council also called on all parties and national forces to support the government's position, reiterating Iraq's constitutional and legal stance against aggression on its lands or using Iraqi territory to launch attacks on neighboring countries.
