KRG, KMCF launch campaign to clean up tourist sites
Activists and local officials will participate in the three-day campaign, which will encompass the foothills of Mount Hendren in the Rawanduz region.
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - The Kurdistan Mountaineering and Climbing Federation (KMCF) announced on Sunday the launch of a campaign to clean up tourist sites from the garbage left behind by some visitors to the region's tourist resorts.
Activists and local officials will participate in the three-day campaign, which will cover Mount Hendren's foothills in the Rawanduz region.
Halgurd Sheikh Najib, the supervisor of the Soran Independent Administration, joined the campaign alongside several environmentalists. Sheikh Najib emphasized the importance of preserving and protecting the environment, noting that it is the duty of every individual in society.
"This campaign is a message to tourists and visitors to ease the burden on the municipality and environmental activists during their trips by collecting their waste upon departure and placing it in its designated place," Sheikh Najib told Kurdistan 24.
Bestoon Salih, the Mountaineers Union's activities officer, highlighted the initiative's broad scope. "We launched a three-day campaign throughout the Kurdistan Region," Salih told Kurdistan 24. He noted a positive response from mountaineering groups in Dohuk, Aqrah, Erbil, Safeen, Soran, and the surrounding parks.
Approximately 1,000 people from 80 mountaineering teams, environmental activists, and local officials participate in the campaign. While the initial focus is cleaning mountains, forests, and tourist areas, the ultimate goal is raising societal awareness about maintaining a clean environment.
