Erbil to implement taximeters in taxis for accurate fare calculation
The ministry is now collaborating with two companies to align on principles that meet international standards for taximeters. "The taximeter is a device to measure the fare based on the distance traveled by a taxi," Ali explained.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Transport and Communications is nearing an agreement with two companies to introduce taximeters in taxis, ensuring precise fare calculations based on distance traveled.
Abdulkhaliq Ali, Director General of Transportation in Erbil, stated, "Last year, when the prime minister visited our ministry, one of the tasks was to install taximeters on taxis in the Kurdistan Region."
Ali elaborated that significant progress has been made in this initiative. "We have been working on issuing necessary guidelines, and for this purpose, a high committee was formed. On July 10, the Ministry of Transport and Communications issued guidelines No. 1 of 2024," he said.
The ministry is now collaborating with two companies to align on principles that meet international standards for taximeters. "The taximeter is a device to measure the fare based on the distance traveled by a taxi," Ali explained.
Emphasizing the adaptation to local conditions, Ali noted, "The taximeter must be installed according to the weather in the Kurdistan Region. We will then approve the type and features of the taximeter."
Approximately 75,000 taxis operate across the Kurdistan Region's four provinces. This move aims to standardize fare calculations and improve the transportation system for both drivers and passengers.
