ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – On World Humanitarian Day, the United Nations (UN) acknowledged the resilience and progress of Iraq, recalling the tragic events of two decades ago while emphasizing the country's ongoing journey toward sustainable solutions and stability.

The UN described Iraq as a beacon of hope and resilience, having overcome some of its most challenging periods.

In a statement reported by Relief Web, the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq, Ghulam Isaczai, highlighted the significance of this day, both globally and for Iraq.

"Today, we join the global community in commemorating World Humanitarian Day, a time to honor and pay tribute to the selfless humanitarian workers who dedicate their lives to serving humanity," Isaczai said.

Isaczai also reflected on the somber anniversary of the Canal Hotel bombing in Baghdad, which occurred on August 19, 2003. The attack claimed the lives of 22 humanitarian aid workers and injured many others.

Despite this tragedy, the United Nations and the broader humanitarian community in Iraq remained steadfast, reaffirming their commitment to peace, stability, and the well-being of the Iraqi people.

Over the past 20 years, these efforts have been instrumental in Iraq’s recovery.

"Our collective efforts with the Government of Iraq have significantly impacted the lives of the Iraqi people, particularly the internally displaced populations (IDPs). Today, the majority of IDPs have returned to their homes, a testament to the resilience of the Iraqi people and the dedication of those who have worked tirelessly to support them," Isaczai noted.

He also reiterated the UN's continued collaboration with the Iraqi government to find lasting solutions for the remaining IDPs and refugees.

While acknowledging Iraq's emergence from some of its most difficult periods, Isaczai also emphasized the ongoing regional and global security challenges that continue to influence the humanitarian landscape.

However, he pointed out that Iraq's current situation stands as a "beacon of hope and resilience," demonstrating that recovery and progress are achievable even in the face of adversity.

On this World Humanitarian Day, Isaczai expressed solidarity with humanitarian workers and victims of conflict worldwide. He highlighted the alarming rise in violence and violations of international humanitarian law in 2024, making it a particularly deadly year for those in the humanitarian sector.

"We honor the memory of those we have lost and urgently call on leaders to put an end to these violations and the impunity that surrounds them. The ongoing failure to address these issues represents a profound lapse in humanity, collective responsibility, and leadership that must not continue," he urged.

Isaczai concluded by reminding the global community of its shared responsibility to uphold the principles of humanity and international humanitarian law, ensuring that those who work to alleviate human suffering can do so safely and effectively.
