ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Independent Commission for Human Rights in the Kurdistan Region has urged Turkish authorities to launch a thorough investigation into the murder of a Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) citizen in Istanbul, Turkey. The commission issued a statement on Sunday condemning the killing and calling for justice.
According to the statement, the victim, identified as Hakim Luqman, a 45-year-old car dealer and father of three, was attacked by several individuals in a cafeteria in Istanbul. Relatives claim that the altercation occurred after Luqman spoke Kurdish, raising concerns about ethnic tensions in Turkey. "The news has alarmed everyone and is a troubling development for a country known for its tourism," the commission said.
The fatal incident occurred in front of the Zurich Hotel in Istanbul, where Luqman and two other residents from the Kalakchi sub-district of Duhok province were involved in a confrontation with a group of people. Luqman was fatally stabbed, while his brother and cousin were also injured and later arrested by Turkish security forces.
The commission condemned the act and urged the Turkish government to swiftly investigate, locate the suspects who fled the scene, and ensure they were brought to justice. So far, no arrests have been made in connection with Luqman's murder.
