ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – A 13-year-old boy accidentally killed his father and infant brother in a tragic shooting incident in Basra Governorate, southern Iraq, on Tuesday morning.

According to security sources, the boy was reportedly playing with a firearm when it accidentally discharged, resulting in the death of his father and his one-and-a-half-year-old brother. His mother was critically injured and rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment.

The incident has shocked the local community, with sources confirming that the shooting was unintentional. Authorities are investigating how the boy gained access to the weapon, which led to the heartbreaking tragedy.

This marks the fourth such tragedy in the past three months.

On July 26, a man opened fire on seven family members with a Kalashnikov rifle in the al-Ankur area of Anbar province, leaving no survivors.

Another massacre occurred on Aug. 21, when gunmen dressed in military uniforms stormed a home in the al-Abbasiya area of northern Samarra, killing a mother and her five children. Just days later, on Aug. 28, armed assailants attacked a house in the Asri neighborhood of Baiji district in Salah Al-Din Governorate, murdering a woman, her husband, and their 10-year-old son before setting their bodies ablaze.

These violent incidents have raised concerns about a disturbing rise in family-related killings. In May, a horrific case emerged from the Shatt al-Arab district in southern Basra, where a man slaughtered 12 members of his family with a Kalashnikov.

Authorities are investigating the motive behind the latest killing in Basra, while citizens call for stronger security measures to prevent further tragedies.
