ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Education announced significant progress in building new schools as part of the ninth cabinet’s agenda, encouraging further investment from capitalists and private sector partners to bolster the region’s education sector.

During a ceremony for the foundation laying of 15 new schools and kindergartens on Tuesday, Education Minister Alan Hama Saeed highlighted the government's achievements under Prime Minister Masrour Barzani’s leadership.

Despite the challenges posed by financial, economic, and health crises, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic, the KRG continued to prioritize education infrastructure development.

“Five years, two months, and seven days ago, the prime minister promised in the ninth cabinet’s agenda that new schools would be built and investors would be encouraged to cooperate with the government,” Saeed said. “Today, these promises have been fulfilled, with 152 schools already built and an additional 42 to be completed by October, bringing the total to 194 schools.”

The minister also praised Prime Minister Barzani for his unwavering commitment to the education sector.

With the support of the KRG budget, the Investment Board, and various volunteers, a total of 1,670 schools have been renovated, and 629 new classrooms have been constructed.

These efforts have expanded school capacity across the Kurdistan Region, providing 106,000 new places for children and students out of the promised 600,000.

“The prime minister’s attention was focused on areas most in need of schools. While we know the needs are many, the government has worked within its capacity to deliver these projects, with the prime minister personally overseeing their completion,” Saeed added.

He further highlighted the construction of three new schools in Erbil's Roshenbiri, Banaslawa, and Zagros neighborhoods.

These 18-classroom schools are expected to help reduce overcrowding in local schools and accommodate students in these growing areas.

The ceremony, attended by Prime Minister Barzani, marks a milestone in the KRG’s long-term plan to enhance education infrastructure and improve the quality of education for students throughout the Kurdistan Region.
