ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Emma Hardy, a Member of the UK Parliament and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Minister for Water and Flooding), commended the flood defense initiatives of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) during an interview with Kurdistan24 on Wednesday. Hardy emphasized the importance of investing in flood defenses, noting the proactive measures taken by Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani to protect local communities from potential flood disasters.

“It’s so important that we look to invest in flood defenses, and it’s really interesting to hear about the work being done by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani to protect more of the communities from flooding,” Hardy said, drawing comparisons to the challenges faced in the UK. “As we’ve seen in our own country with the rainfall over the past 24 hours, these flood defenses offer a vital lifeline, protecting so many people from the devastating impact of flooding.”

Hardy praised the engineering efforts behind the flood protection systems in the Kurdistan Region, which aim to mitigate the impact of climate-induced flooding. “These are fantastic pieces of engineering. They will hold water away from communities and businesses, preventing the devastating consequences of flooding,” she remarked, highlighting the significance of flood protection for both households and businesses.

The UK MP also stressed the importance of international collaboration in addressing the challenges posed by climate change, including increased flooding. “It’s important to work with as many countries as we can to find solutions to the challenges we’ll face due to climate change,” Hardy added, emphasizing the global scale of the issue.

The Kurdistan Region, like many parts of the world, is grappling with the growing threat of climate-induced disasters. The KRG’s focus on enhancing flood defenses is part of a broader strategy to protect its citizens and economy from the increasing risks associated with extreme weather events.
