1,466 Peshmerga died, 8,610 wounded in IS war

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – On Sunday, a Peshmerga official revealed that so far, in the war with the Islamic State (IS), almost 1,500 Peshmerga have lost their lives and about 9,000 are injured.

The General Director of the Peshmerga Ministry Jabar Yawar released the statistics of Peshmerga casualties in the war against the jihadists.

According to the statistics, since the beginning of the IS war in June 2014 until now, 1,466 Peshmerga soldiers have been ‘martyred.’

Regarding the number of wounded Peshmerga, the data shows that 8,610 Peshmerga have been injured, with some of them being sent abroad to receive proper medical treatment.

Additionally, the ministry mentioned that so far, 62 Peshmerga soldiers have been lost, and their whereabouts are unknown.

On June 2014, IS insurgents took control of large swaths of territory in Iraq, including Nineveh, Diyala, Salahaddin and Anbar provinces.

Since then, Peshmerga forces have liberated many areas from IS and killed thousands of extremists, sharing over 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) of Kurdistan’s border with IS in the south of the Region.

Peshmerga has been one of the most efficient ground forces in defeating IS, pushing back the jihadists in the north of Iraq, with the support of international coalition airstrikes.

Recently, Peshmerga launched a military offensive in Khazir front line, east of Mosul. In the operation, Peshmerga successfully liberated almost 10 villages from IS and pushed the terrorists back to Mosul.

Kurdish officials continuously mention that Peshmerga fights the biggest terrorist organization in the globe on behalf of the world. However, they do not receive enough sufficient military aid from the international community.
