KRP Nechirvan Barzani, UN Special Representative discuss elections, Erbil-Baghdad relations

Kurdistan Region President Barzani took the opportunity to thank the United Nations for its support to the Independent High Electoral Commission of Iraq in preparation for the Kurdistan parliamentary elections.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - On Tuesday, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani welcomed Dr. Mohammed al-Hassan, the new Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), in a significant diplomatic meeting at the Kurdistan Region Presidency.

According to a statement released by the Kurdistan Region Presidency, Kurdistan Region President Barzani congratulated al-Hassan on his appointment and wished him success in his new role. The Kurdistan Region President also reaffirmed the Kurdistan Region's full support for UNAMI's mission in Iraq.

Dr. Al-Hassan expressed his pleasure at visiting the Kurdistan Region and thanked President Barzani and relevant Kurdish authorities for their cooperation with the UN team in Iraq.

The meeting covered several crucial topics, including the upcoming Kurdistan Parliament elections, Erbil-Baghdad relations, and the situation of various ethnic and religious components in Iraq, with a particular focus on the Yazidi community.

He also stressed the importance of improving the situation of the Yezidi community, restoring security to their areas, and facilitating the return of displaced Yezidis to their homes.

The discussion also touched on other matters of mutual interest, highlighting the broad scope of cooperation between the Kurdistan Region and the United Nations.
