Iraqi parliament extends legislative session by 30 days

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Iraqi parliament extended its legislative session by an additional 30 days on Thursday, in a move aimed at addressing stalled legislative priorities. The session, initially scheduled to end on Saturday, will now continue until early November.

According to Mohammed al-Khafaji, a member of the parliamentary legal committee, the extension aligns with Article 58 of the Iraqi constitution, which allows for such adjustments when requested by the president, prime minister, parliamentary speaker, or a group of at least 50 MPs, pending majority approval from parliament.

Al-Khafaji emphasized that the extra time is essential for the parliament to reorganize its workflow and address the backlog of pending legislation that has repeatedly been left off the parliamentary agenda. He added that this extended period would also allow the government to present the 2025 budget bill to parliament before the year’s end.

“This extension provides an opportunity to focus on unfinished work and ensure we’re prepared to review the upcoming budget,” al-Khafaji said.
