ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A tragic incident in Basra resulted in one death and one injury following a dispute over 4,000 Iraqi dinars (approximately $3), Iraqi media reported on Friday evening.

According to local media reports, the incident occurred in Basra's Qibla district on Friday night, Nov. 8, when an argument between a shop owner and a customer escalated into a deadly confrontation.

A bystander attempting to mediate the situation was killed, and another person was wounded.

The dispute arose when the customer paid back a month's credit but was short by 4,000 dinars. The shop owner's disagreement over the missing amount led to a verbal altercation that quickly escalated into an armed conflict.

The deceased mediator, identified as Nassib, 35, was visiting his in-laws' house near the incident location when he noticed the altercation.

His attempt to peacefully resolve the situation ended tragically with his death.

Basra, Iraq's southern port city and economic hub, has witnessed various incidents of violence stemming from personal disputes.

The tragedy highlights the ongoing concerns about armed conflict resolution in civilian areas and the accessibility of weapons in Iraqi society.

The value of 4,000 Iraqi dinars, equivalent to approximately three US dollars, underscores the devastating consequences of what began as a minor financial dispute.
