ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - A vehicle plowed into a crowd outside a sports center in Zhuhai city, China, on Monday evening, Nov. 11, 2024, killing 35 people and injuring 43 others, according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.

According to Chinese police reports, the incident occurred when a large number of people were exercising outside the sports facility.

The driver deliberately drove into the crowd before fleeing the scene.

Chinese media outlets report that the suspect is over 62 years old, surnamed Fan, and managed to escape before security forces arrived at the scene.

The suspect had been "triggered by (his) dissatisfaction with the division of property following his divorce", the police said in a statement.

A manhunt ensued to apprehend the suspect. The police found Fan in his car cutting himself with a knife, before they stopped him and sent him to hospital.

He is currently in a coma after self-inflicted injuries to his neck and other parts of his body and unable to undergo interrogation, police added.

Zhuhai, a major city in Guangdong Province, is located on the southern coast of China. The city, known for its tourist attractions and as one of China's special economic zones, borders Macau.

This incident represents one of the deadliest vehicular attacks in recent Chinese history. While such attacks have occurred occasionally in China, they remain relatively rare in the country's major cities, where security measures are typically strict and comprehensive.
