ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — The second session of the Middle East Peace Summit 2024 (MEPS24), titled "Building Prosperity: The Interplay Between Public Policy, Foreign Policy & Geoeconomics," has begun at the American University of Kurdistan in Duhok. The session examines how governance, economic policies, and international relations can converge to foster prosperity in the Middle East.

Former Iraqi Foreign Minister and Member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party political bureau Hoshyar Zebari offered a candid assessment of the challenges facing Iraq and the broader region, asserting that "the first conditions of prosperity are peace and security."

He emphasized that without stability, efforts to achieve economic growth and social development remain elusive.

Governance and Economic Challenges

Zebari identified key structural issues hindering prosperity in Iraq, notably the absence of good governance and a modern financial system. "We lack good governance," he remarked, highlighting systemic inefficiencies and corruption that have long plagued public institutions.

He added, "We lack a modern financial system," pointing to outdated economic frameworks that undermine Iraq’s potential for growth and investment.

Efforts Toward Reform

Despite these challenges, Zebari expressed cautious optimism about the current Iraqi government under Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. "This government of Prime Minister al-Sudani is trying to address the issues we have now," he said, acknowledging ongoing reform initiatives aimed at improving governance, modernizing financial infrastructure, and promoting economic stability.

A Broader Regional Perspective

The session continues to explore the complex interplay between public policy, foreign policy, and geoeconomics, as panelists and experts discuss how the Middle East can leverage its strategic position and resources to build sustainable prosperity.

As MEPS24 progresses, it remains a key platform for fostering dialogue and collaboration, providing leaders and policymakers with the opportunity to address pressing challenges and identify actionable solutions.
