ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region Interior Minister Reber Ahmed, speaking at the first panel of day two at the MEPS 2024 forum in Duhok, highlighted recent security cooperation with Baghdad while warning of persistent security gaps in disputed territories.

"We have recently established two joint brigades comprising Peshmerga and Iraqi army forces, conducting successful joint operations in areas with security vacuums," Ahmed stated during his address.

The Interior Minister expressed particular concern about security gaps in southern Kirkuk between Iraqi army and Peshmerga positions. "These indicators emphasize the necessity for coordination between Erbil, Baghdad, and the international community," he noted, adding, "We must rebuild our relationships with the international community and coalition. We cannot face terrorism alone, as it exists not only in Iraq but also in Syria and other countries."

The formation of joint brigades between Peshmerga and Iraqi forces represents a significant step in security cooperation between Erbil and Baghdad. The disputed territories, particularly around Kirkuk, have historically been vulnerable to security threats due to coordination gaps between Kurdish and federal forces. This cooperation comes as part of broader efforts to prevent the resurgence of terrorist groups in areas that have previously experienced security vacuums.
