ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Marking a decade of excellence, the American University of Kurdistan (AUK) celebrated its 10th anniversary on Sunday in a grand ceremony attended by key dignitaries, including Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, government officials, diplomats, alumni, and students.
AUK Chairman and Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani delivered an inspiring keynote address, reflecting on the institution's journey and its pivotal role in advancing education in the region.
“Today, we celebrate a milestone of immense pride and inspiration,” Barzani stated, expressing his gratitude to everyone involved in AUK's growth. He recalled his own educational experiences in Washington, D.C., which shaped his vision for creating a world-class university in the Kurdistan Region. “I dreamed of a future where our youth could access high-quality education without leaving their homeland. That dream is now a reality.”
Barzani highlighted the university’s resilience in overcoming challenges, including the threat of ISIS and the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these obstacles, AUK achieved a significant milestone in 2018 by securing Candidacy status from the New England Commission of Higher Education, making it the only institution in Iraq with U.S.-recognized accreditation.
“This is not just an accomplishment for AUK but a stepping stone for Kurdistan's broader educational reforms,” he noted, announcing plans to establish a national accreditation body to elevate academic standards across the region.
AUK’s achievements extend beyond education. The institution’s College of Nursing is training the next generation of healthcare professionals, while its professional development programs contribute to workforce readiness. Approximately 70% of students benefit from scholarships supported by philanthropists, international organizations, and corporate partners.
Barzani also emphasized the university’s alignment with the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Vision 2030, which aims to transform education from K-12 to higher education. “AUK is not just an educational institution; it is a beacon of innovation, shaping Kurdistan’s future workforce and driving socioeconomic development.”
In his closing remarks, Barzani thanked President Nechirvan Barzani for his unwavering support and expressed gratitude to the US government for its contributions to AUK. He also acknowledged the Board of Trustees and the AUK Foundation for their commitment to the university’s mission.
As AUK enters its second decade, Barzani called for collective efforts to further elevate the institution as a model of excellence, stating, “Together, we will shape a brighter future for our nation through education.”
